The plot

Are we ready to dive into the abyss of the fourth dimension?

Red is a guy like many others. One morning he finds a double of himself at his door, Science, who catapults him into the multiverse. Between a quantum mechanics formula and a chat about how magic works, they are joined by Camera, the multiverse’s creator.

A few years go by and the three make new friends until Science, brilliant scientist, discovers a potential catastrophe without precedent. The three will have to defeat a threat that lurks between one universe and the next and is slowly changing the laws of physics.

Everyone, alike in biology but different in psychology, reacts in their own way. The only way to decide what to do is to convince the Company, the group that has formed around them from one journey to the next, with philosophy and logic.

UNIVERSE #####, #####################:##, ##/##/####

There was no time to think even a single syllable.

In a corridor that stretched claustrophobically as far as the eye could see, there were columns finished down to the smallest detail and, as the narrow room went on, the style of the columns evolved and retraced the history of mankind.

At the entrance, megalithic pillars tried to replicate Stonehenge. Then columns in a Doric style, then Ionic, then Corinthian. The march of history, reproduced in that place, did not stop after passing the Romans. Going further and further, all of a strange ochre-colored marble, the columns followed one another in Gothic style, then Renaissance, Cinquecento, Baroque. At the end of the great hall, darkened by the dim light, an austere but imposing pillar held up that depiction of the relentless passage of time, in kahoots with the megaliths at the entrance.

The floor, made of that same peculiar ochre marble, was puzzling for a quirk of its. In a natural within the block of stone itself, some large orange squares changed hues just enough to make those patches look like tiles. The floor was perfectly smooth to the touch, but sight screamed it was not all of a piece.

The windows, symmetrical on either side of each column, let the moonlight in like silent guardians guarding the night that went on calmly outside, a serene starless night silenced by the deafening glare of the full moon. The shadows of the wrought-iron inlays were cast on the ground, distorted by perspective. Although the light could barely be perceived, the shapes of those inlays would have been able to blind anyone who looked at them too closely from certain spots.

In that corridor, so rich of details and finishes, a boy was fleeing in horror. His short beard and brown hair, soaked with the sweat that poured abundantly from his forehead and temples, were dragged against the wind by the rest of his face, caught in an expression of desperation. His black t-shirt, loose enough to fold but not enough to hinder his movements, was put to the test by the marathon, like the red and black checked shirt he wore over it. His jeans and sneakers, worn out by that race against time, barely held

How it begins

A nightmare put down on paper

The first chapter is different from all the others because the author kind of lived it. It is in fact the transcription of a recurring nightmare he had between January and July 2018. Are the universe, place, time, and date redacted or are they beyond these four dimensions?

Science and philosophy

Physics and philosophy as common points

Philosophy and physics hold together the novel and the saga. Not using the tall tales often used as an excuse for the plot, this is historical philosophy and cutting-edge physics. Even the openly fantastic elements have a scientific or philosophical explanation.

Many Worlds interpretation

The multiverse

Every time history can take a different turn, another timeline begins. The novel stages thirteen of them, but the number of timelines that exist is much higher.

Matter-antimatter interactions

Magic

A flow of positrons from the radioactive decay of potassium-40 in the human brain. It comes out through the optic nerve because it is the point of least electrical resistance. The sclera turns black and the iris takes on the color of the soul.

Res cogitans and res extensa

The soul

Descartes’ res cogitans, in certain forms, can give life to a being. There are eight types of res cogitans, each with its own color, and the most present one colors the soul.

Fundamental fields

The Higgs collapse

Someone is changing the constants from the laws of physics, sending the rest of the multiverse to ruin through the effects of a different physics. Different gravity and speed of light mean stronger collapses.

Einstein-Rosen bridges
and Alcubierre drive

Traveling between worlds

There are two ways to get from one world to another. Either outrun light with U21’s Alcubierre drive or jump from one universe to another with a portal gun made by Science.

The Overton window

Philosophy and ethics

Who has the right to decide for everyone? Every universe reasons its own ways and has to be convinced through logic.

How to solve

Three paths, seven days, no unanimity

Every universe in the Company gets one vote and, this time, a decision needs unanimity. The book doesn’t say who is right, everyone is right in their own way.

  1. Restore the constants

Camera puts the constants of physics back in their place. To do it, he needs a whole day to charge up.

  2. Change the rules

Besides the restoration of option one, identical timelines merge back together. The multiverse becomes more stable this way.

  3. The lifeboat

If nothing else works, a copy of humanity will be saved by a universe launched faster than the speed of light.

Why was the book rewritten?

At the first presentation, on September 17, 2022, a question comes from the audience. «Mr. Dello Buono, why are there no female characters?». That is where the rewrite starts, bringing two female characters into every universe and refining the worlds of the novel.

«Hearing “multiverse” used as material for Marvel superheroes or a theme of fantasy books, one naturally wonders what the book contains. A fantasy story between science fiction and myth or something more?»
