A guide to the thirteen universes of MULTIVERSE, for those who have finished reading the novel and for those who want to find their bearings before starting. All without spoilers on the ending, of course.

How the timelines split
Every time history can take a different turn, a new timeline begins. Except for U0, all known timelines come from U45, ours. The number of each timeline is its coordinate in the fourth spatial dimension, named with the letter W. That is why Science’s universe, with coordinate 9, is called U9.

U0
Exists since the Big Bang
A comet wiped humanity off the face of the Earth and Camera is the only intelligent life left. His villa stands on the slopes of Mt. Vesuvius. It’s the only timeline that doesn’t split.

U9
Exists since Roman times
born from U45
This timeline splits from U45 in 50 BC, but the effects show best in the V century. The Roman Empire doesn’t collapse and conquers the world with extremely advanced science and industry. Senators in togas debate the rights of synths and suborbital flights are paid in sesterti. This is where the Sciences come from.

Exists since the 1990s
born from U45
This timeline glimpses small scientific changes in the ’90s, linked to the many-worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics. In the 2020s, this timeline moves hastily along the fourth dimension while the role of universal judge passes from hand to hand among the Company members of this universe. This is where the Crosses come from.

Exists since the XVIII century

The united world that grew out of U9’s Roman Republic decides that life is good enough and lets loose. An advanced but deeply hedonistic society, where influencers, musicians and celebrities matter more than ever. This is where the Musics come from.
Fight or fight

Exists since the Paleozoic
born from U45
Plants release traces of cortisol and dopamine, living beings are more stressed and violent because of it. Larger but shorter-lived empires, five world wars and brutality seen as normal. This is where the Fells come from.
Scientific theory gone wrong

Exists since the Cold War
born from U45
It isn’t fully part of the Company, but Science visited it while exploring the multiverse. The crazy experiments of the Cold War era keep going to this day. This is where Tred comes from, but everything will be explained better in chapter number V.

Daring Roman scientists build the first rockets and leave the atmosphere without Arabic numerals. A bolder and luckier than its U9 variant humanity colonizes space and leads the Milky Way Federation. Getting to Artemis, or Proxima b if you prefer, is a matter of minutes. This is where the Outers come from.
Madness, terror and despair

born from U45
The main timeline of the genocide event. In this timeline a driven-mad-by-grief Red destroys Magnavalle, becoming the one we know in the Company as Dust. A few well-put tragedies and even a hero becomes a monster. Volume III will tell the full story.
Changing the order of the addends the result… changes?

A few weeks after the start of the genocide event, Red manages to avoid madness and, destroyed by despair, swears revenge as he changes his nickname to Shock. The culprit is not the same as in U23, but it will all be made clear in due time in volume III.

Exists since the Big Bang
Nothing changes compared to reality. What makes it special, as Camera says on page 37, is that all other timelines in the multiverse come from here.

Unlike U13 and U45, here plants release traces of serotonin. The world is more peaceful, tolerant, and cosmopolitan. Power structures are inverted compared to ours… and not only those. This is where the Swaps come from.

The industrial revolution, which came earlier to U9, shakes the ruling class. GMO plants, renewable energy and renewable infrastructure become mantras instilled in people’s minds to the point that here even a cigarette butt is burned with care for the plants. This is where the Greens come from.

The third timeline of the genocide event, where things change thanks to Camera’s intervention. An object given to the one who will become Serif will allow him to become who we see in the Company and more than a simple human.
Soul functions 101
Eight traits, eight thinking substances, eight colors
Every soul is made of eight fundamental psychological traits, in different proportions, each induced by a particular res cogitans. The most present trait gives it its color and one’s personality comes from the proportions.
Hatred is the exception. It never fully colors the soul, being the weakest trait of them all. It only takes over under heavy stress or after trauma and, even then, it isn’t enough to overtake the second trait in the list. In those cases, the latter tints the edges.

The Company
The same group of people comes from every universe. Each has a character that shows through in their doubles around the multiverse, seeming almost reinterpreted by the different events of their own timeline. The characters’ ages are calculated as of July 2024.

Five concepts to know
- Blaze
- Red’s variants as taken collectively. Each of them gives his nickname to his universe’s group, since they are slightly more numerous.
- Company
- The group that formed around Red, Science, and Camera, one journey after another.
- Universe!Person
- To identify one person among eighty-five, you need to combine the universe’s nickname and the U45 counterpart. For example, Music!Giada is the Giada from the Musics’ universe.
- Universal judge
- It takes a strong latent ability with magic, enough knowledge of quantum mechanics to follow the Company’s discussions and a psyche that’s able to withstand disasters. Their task is to protect the other Company members of their universe, whatever it takes. It usually is that universe’s Blaze but not all the time, in U54 it’s Swap!Legend, in U3945 it’s Green!Anonymous and in U21 it’s Outer!Timed.

Come si sono divise le timeline
Ogni volta che la storia può prendere una piega diversa, una nuova timeline inizia. Tranne l’U0, tutte quelle conosciute derivano dall’U45, la nostra. Il numero di ciascuna timeline è la sua coordinata nella quarta dimensione spaziale, denominata con la lettera W. Per questo, l’universo di Science che ha coordinata 9 si chiama U9.

Una cometa ha spazzato via l’umanità dalla faccia della Terra e a rappresentare la vita intelligente resta solo Camera. La sua villa si trova alle pendici del Vesuvio. È l’unica timeline che non si sdoppia.

Esiste dall’epoca romana
nata dall’U45
Questa timeline si divide dall’U45 nel 50 a.C. ma gli effetti si vedono meglio nel V secolo. L’Impero Romano non crolla e conquista il mondo con una scienza e un’industria avanzatissime. Senatori in toga discutono dei diritti dei sintetici e i voli suborbitali si pagano in sesterzi. Da qui vengono i Science.
Come noi ma non proprio

Esiste dagli anni ’90
nata dall’U45
Questa timeline intravede piccoli cambiamenti scientifici negli anni ’90, legati all’interpretazione a molti mondi della meccanica quantistica. Negli anni ’20, questa timeline si sposta frettolosamente lungo la quarta dimensione mentre il ruolo di giudice universale passa di mano in mano tra i membri della Compagnia di questo universo. Da qui vengono i Cross.

Il mondo unito derivato dalla Repubblica Romana dell’U9 decide che si sta abbastanza bene e si dà alla pazza gioia. Una società avanzata ma profondamente edonista, dove influencer, musicisti e celebrità contano più che mai. Da qui vengono i Music.

Esiste dal Paleozoico

Le piante emettono tracce di cortisolo e dopamina, gli esseri viventi sono per questo più stressati e violenti. Imperi grandi ma di breve durata, cinque guerre mondiali e brutalità viste come normali. Da qui vengono i Fell.
Teoria scientifica finita male

Esiste dalla Guerra Fredda

Non fa del tutto parte della Compagnia, ma Science l’ha visitata esplorando il multiverso. Gli esperimenti strampalati della Guerra Fredda continuano fino ai giorni nostri. Da qui viene Tred, ma verrà spiegato tutto nel capitolo V.

Degli audaci scienziati romani costruiscono i primi razzi e lasciano l’atmosfera senza i numeri arabi. Un’umanità più spregiudicata e fortunata della sua variante all’U9 colonizza lo spazio e guida la Federazione della Via Lattea. Andare su Artemide o Proxima b che dir si voglia è questione di due minuti. Da qui vengono gli Outer.
Follia, terrore e disperazione

La timeline principale dell’evento genocide. In questa linea temporale un Red ammattito dal dolore distrugge Magnavalle diventando quello che, alla Compagnia, conosciamo come Dust. Poche piccole tragedie e anche un eroe diventa un mostro. La storia completa la racconterà il volume III.

Poche settimane dopo l’inizio dell’evento genocide, Red riesce ad evitare la follia e, distrutto dalla disperazione, giura vendetta cambiando nomignolo in Shock. Il responsabile non è lo stesso dell’U23, ma verrà tutto chiarito a tempo debito nel volume III.

Non cambia nulla rispetto alla realtà. La sua particolarità, come dice Camera a pagina 37, è che da qui derivano tutte le altre timeline del multiverso.

A differenza dell’U13 e dell’U45, qui le piante emettono tracce di serotonina. Il mondo è più pacifico, tollerante e cosmopolita. Le strutture di potere sono invertite rispetto alle nostre… e non solo quelle. Da qui vengono gli Swap.

Esiste dal Rinascimento

La rivoluzione industriale arrivata prima all’U9 sconvolge la classe dirigente. Piante OGM, energie rinnovabili e infrastrutture rinnovabili diventano mantra instillati nella mente della gente a tal punto che qui anche un mozzicone si brucia stando attenti alle piante. Da qui vengono i Green.

La terza timeline dell’evento genocide, dove la situazione cambia grazie ad un intervento di Camera. Un oggetto donato a quello che diventerà Serif gli permetterà di diventare quello che si vede alla Compagnia e di diventare più di un semplice umano.
L’anima e come funziona
Otto tratti, otto sostanze pensanti, otto colori
Ogni anima è composta da otto tratti psicologici fondamentali, in proporzioni diverse, ciascuno indotto da una particolare res cogitans. Il tratto più presente le dà il colore e la personalità deriva dalle proporzioni.
L’odio fa eccezione. Non colora mai del tutto l’anima, essendo il tratto più debole. Prende il sopravvento solo sotto forte stress o dopo un trauma e anche in quei casi non basta a superare il secondo tratto. Quest’ultimo, in quei casi, tinge i bordi.

La Compagnia
Da ogni universo vengono sempre le stesse persone. Ognuno ha un carattere che si intravede anche nei propri doppioni in giro per il multiverso, ma sembra quasi rivisto in chiave diversa per i diversi avvenimenti della propria linea temporale. Le età dei personaggi sono calcolate nel luglio 2024.

Cinque concetti da sapere
- Blaze
- Le varianti di Red, collettivamente. Ognuno di loro dà il nome al gruppo del proprio universo in quanto leggermente più numerosi.
- Compagnia
- Il gruppo che si è formato attorno a Red, Science e Camera, un viaggio dopo l’altro.
- Universo!Persona
- Per identificare una persona tra ottantacinque, serve incrociare nomignolo dell’universo e corrispettivo all’U45. Per esempio, Music!Giada è la Giada dell’universo dei Music.
- Giudice universale
- Serve una forte capacità latente nell’uso della magia, una conoscenza della meccanica quantistica sufficiente a seguire le discussioni della Compagnia e una psiche capace di reggere i disastri. Il loro compito è proteggere gli altri membri della Compagnia del proprio universo, costi quel che costi. Di norma tocca al Blaze di quell’universo ma non sempre, all’U54 è Swap!Legend, all’U3945 è Green!Anonymous e all’U21 è Outer!Timed.

- L’invenzione dei Science. Una pistola che apre varchi tra un universo e l’altro.
