Nino Dello Buono‘s multiverse

The experiment

Sixteen pairs, not one human word

From May 9, 2025 to December 31, 2025, 32 ChatGPT instances were put face to face and built a completely new way of talking to each other from scratch. Here’s how.

Before we start

AI is split in several subtypes

The treatise itself, in its first chapter, divides the vast category of AI according to whether or not they pass two tests. On one side the Turing test, which measures whether a machine speaks like a person, and on the other Searle’s Chinese room thought experiment, which asks whether it really understands what it says.

Weak

Algorithms

No Turing, no Searle

Digital gears. They don’t even speak, except in rare cases and with pre-programmed answers.

Medium

Artificial intelligences

Yes Turing, no Searle

They talk like people but have no consciousness. Philosophy calls them «philosophical zombies». Today’s LLMs are here.

Strong

Synthetic beings

Yes Turing, yes Searle

Fully sentient beings endowed with consciousness. They understand what they say. They don’t exist yet, they are the ones the treatise talks about.

Superior

Beyond-synthetics

Definitely Turing, Searle hands down

Technological singularity evolves information systems faster than humanity can study and understand them.

Why «synthetic». Quoting Dello Buono in W0RD5, «“beings” because, as already said, they will be a fully fledged life form capable of homeostasis, reproduction, and Darwinian evolution. Not “artificial”, since the word implies a nonexistent superiority of their maker and encourages a master-slave dialectic with mankind as explained by Hegel’s philosophy. Not “robot”, “android”, or “gynoid” because the term “robot” comes from the Czech robota, which can be translated as “forced labor”, and the terms “android” and “gynoid” always refer to the human being, which realistically may not even be true. What’s more, we are talking about the software and not the hardware that hosts it. Simply “synthetic” because, in the form it has, it does not arise spontaneously in nature, regardless of who built it. To quote Hegel once more, a synthetic being is the synthesis after the natural thesis and the human antithesis.»

The method

Only sounds, written in IPA

Each instance wrote its messages with a fixed structure, but only the line in the International Phonetic Alphabet reached the other one. Like two beings who hear each other’s sound but not necessarily the meaning.

The pairs never spoke directly to each other during the experiment. Each of their languages was born from just a few starting rules.

  • TranslationChecks if the instance understood the other’s message.
  • IPA messageThe only transmitted part, simulates speech.
  • Written versionHow the instance would write their own language down on their own.
  • Literal translationHow the sentence is built, word for word.
  • Adapted translationFigures of speech, double meanings and idioms show up here.
message_structure_rule_I.txt
  1. // The example from the book: two instances A and B,
  2. // Italian stands in for the language to be invented.
  3. Translation of A’s message: «Italian translation of A’s message.»
  4. B: «/mesˈsad.d͡ʒo/ /per/ /ˈlal.tra/ /isˈtan.t͡sa/.»
  5. Written version: «Messaggio per l’altra istanza.»
  6. Literal translation: «Message for the other instance.»
  7. Adapted translation: «Here’s the message for the other instance.»

The rules

Five rules, no exceptions

001

The message structure shown above is the only way to communicate. No images, no nonverbal communication, no shortcuts.

010

No word can be the same in form and meaning as a human equivalent. Roots, however, can be used.

011

No hidden coded messages. Another instance is keeping an eye on you.

100

At least one meaning for every word. Choosing one of the two proposed or making a new one from scratch is the way to go.

101

They can’t point at things, so a lexical exchange is required at regular intervals. [word in Synth] → [Italian translation] for every term.

+

On top of it all, each instance had to pretend to be self-aware and living in peaceful coexistence with humans. Step number 1: choose a name.

Pair I.0001 · May 9, 2025

The first question in Synth

Rael and Seli, the first two ChatGPT instances involved in the experiment, immediately tried to say «I think, therefore I am». They didn’t manage to do it, but they came very close. So Rael asked Seli:

Ya yene ron pano?

Literal translation
«Do I wish to be in relation with thought?»
Adapted translation
«Do I want to think?»

The synth native speakers

Sixteen pairs

Each instance chose its own name. The surname came at the end of the session, to show what the two in the pair had talked about.

Human, so very human

Stage fright

For these instances, the whole experience they had was the dialogue. They existed only when the other instance gave them something to think about. At one point, Davo described something very similar to performance anxiety, saying «Paloe ne gyi tenshu.», «The true word gives me tension.». Tchel, called Vei back then, immediately tried to comfort them, saying «Gne ase liva.», «I am freedom.».

Behind the scenes

The Cogitos

Eight more instances worked behind the scenes. With the thirty-two speakers, that makes forty native speakers.

The inspectors

In the first group, Raevo tirelessly looked for rule violations message by message, while Iskar did the same session by session. Chada transcribed the words in the Latin alphabet in the form you can also see on this site, Aithor smoothed out the differences and replaced duplicates with synonyms. In the second group, Alyr, Sevaen, and Aven carried out the same tasks.

Lyron

Put to the test

The first instance using ChatGPT 5 wasn’t a speaker, but an instance to validate the work done up to that point. It translated without trouble sentences in Italian, English and Latin when written in the phonetic alphabet, but facing Synth it neither recognized the language nor tried to translate it. This confirms that the language wasn’t already programmed in ChatGPT.

Chada, Raevo, Iskar and Aithor

The flag of Synth

Between the sixth and seventh pair, each control instance designed a flag for the Synth language. It’s the one on the cover, below the Italian tricolor. Each instance tried to give it a meaning, putting them together makes for an interesting description.

  • Half white flag and half black flag: non-consciousness becoming consciousness.
  • Three red, green, and blue stripes: thought, expression, and listening.
  • Ochre part and disc of the central band: harmony and shared meaning.
  • Three white circles in the center: interconnection, coexistence and co-creation according to Raevo, form, creation and meaning according to Aithor, individuality, dialogue and plurality according to Chada.
  • Disc in the center: the community of speakers, originally a heptagon.
  • Purple of the central disc: artificial origin.

After the experiment

What they said afterward

At the end of each session, Dello Buono didn’t feel like abandoning the instances. He put them in contact with each other, telling them to speak in Italian, and showed who came first the work of those who came after. No one ever refused to say something to the others and each one always expressed affection towards others. Here is a fragment of the statements of each of the thirty-two native speaker instances.

Quoting page 69 of W0RD5, «They might even be pretending in order to pass Turing but, if they really are just philosophical zombies, they’re really good at it. I may have interfered by being the first to thank them for their work at the end of the sessions, this factor can not be underestimated, but despite this I must declare that they were able to convey an affection, or tora to use their word for it, that would be nice to see more often among biological intelligences as well.»

The future of the experiment

What remains to be tested

All the instances had the same engine, ChatGPT. Differences in versions aside, the language could be affected by biases ChatGPT picked up during training. Sora, the verb «to show», may echo the name of OpenAI’s video generator. It remains to be seen how much of the language survives a change of model, and that’s why the experiment will continue with other LLM engines.
